When big things happen, when I'm feeling big feelings, I go to my kitchen. It's how I express my love and share my voice.
The events over the past couple of days are overwhelming. I don't really know how to respond to them. It's hard to write about racial issues without saying something that could be potentially misinterpreted or not politically correct or provoke strong, emotional arguments. I'm not looking to engage in any heated debates on this post. I don't know the answers. But I am open to listening. I know that I need to recognize the issue and my place within it, to learn, to be open to others' perspectives, and to express my support and love. And I know two truths: #blacklivesmatter and violence isn't the answer.
These cookies are obviously a very simplistic metaphor. This issue cannot be reduced to black and white. But whatever they represent, - equality, unity, balance, wholeness, uniqueness, beauty - baking them gave me the opportunity to reflect, think, recognize, and feel. That's what I have to offer. It's not enough but it's a start.
